Into The Thick of It – Toothpaste

Cruising down the dental aisle at Duane Reade or CVS is a kaleidoscopic tour.  So many choices and so little time to choose, somebody help me.  Glenn Reit DDS, here to give you an inside look at the differences in toothpastes.

Why do most toothpastes feel gritty?  That’s because the abrasive nature of toothpaste is to help with removing dental plaque and food from the surface of your teeth.  Vigorous tooth brushing is unnecessary when the toothpaste is designed to remove bits of food and polish the surface of your teeth at the same time.

Why is toothpaste minty fresh and nice?  Minty flavorings are used to encourage continued use of the paste and to freshen breath.  However toothpaste is not designed to cure bad breath.  To prevent bad breath you need to prevent periodontal disease and brush bacteria on the back of your tongue.  Removing the source is more vital than trying to cover it up with minty flavorings.

Why is fluoride placed into toothpaste?   Fluoride present in small amounts in plants, animals and some natural water sources is championed for its ability for preventing tooth decay and controlling gingivitis.  Fluoride incorporated into the drinking water supply has vastly decreased the amount of tooth decay present in the general population.

If I am brushing, do I need to floss?  YES YES YES.  Think of your teeth as cubes or squares.  Your toothbrush can only get onto the top, front and back of your teeth.  To get in between your teeth you need that little piece of string known as dental floss.  This is the only way to get between your adjacent teeth to clean there.  Most decay starts in between your teeth due to lack of flossing.

What about mouthwash?  The use of mouthwash cannot replace the regular brushing and flossing.  Mouthwash just adds another effective layer of defense against bacterial growth in your mouth.

If you haven’t had your teeth cleaned in awhile realize your teeth want to be cleaned.  Being proactive is always better than being reactive.  At the dental practice of Dr Glenn Reit DDS at 1498 Third Avenue between 84th and 85th Streets in Yorkville we like meeting people and taking care of their dental needs.

If you are in the area or not and need an exam or cleaning or possibly something more give us a call at 212 517 9000.  You and your teeth will be glad you did.

Solving Dental Dilemmas- Dental Crowns

My kingdom for a crown or my tooth has lost its head and needs to be crowned.  Life happens and teeth can come upon hard times and fall apart.  Due to clenching, grinding or long ago placed dental fillings your teeth can become tired and break apart.

When that happens you’ll find yourself in a dental office with a dental problem that needs resolving.  If your teeth need to be crowned you might ask what a dental crown is.  A dental crown is a strong, natural-looking permanent tooth restoration that covers the top of your damaged tooth.

Why might you need a crown?  A broken tooth with decay or possibly an ill-fitting existing crown in your mouth.  You have a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy and will now become brittle leading to fracture.  You have a small or misshapen tooth or your tooth is interfering with your bite.

The procedure involves preparing your tooth to receive the lab created crown which is done under local anesthesia so you’ll be comfortable during the procedure.  An impression is taken of your tooth and sent to the cosmetic lab we use in Beverly Hills, California.  During the time the permanent crown is being made we will fit you with a temporary crown.  Then before you know it your new crown will arrive and be cemented onto your tooth.

There are multiple types of crowns we can perform for you.  Each has their pros and cons and will be discussed in full before treatment.  We also will explain all costs involved and any insurance reimbursement to allow you to make an educated decision.

At the dental practice of Dr Glenn Reit DDS at 1498 Third Avenue in Yorkville we like meeting new people and resolving any tooth issues they might have.  If you are looking for a dentist give us a call today at 212 517 9000.  It will be one less problem in your life.

Are You Happy With Your Smile?

Fall into the Gap or maybe not.   Do you want to appear like David Letterman?  Maybe you do but maybe you do not.  We are talking about dental dilemmas here.  Like a big space between your upper front teeth.  Good for sucking juice through a straw with your mouth closed but not so well for most when smiling.  Remember you lead with your smile.  So what can you do?

Here at the dental practice of Glenn Reit DDS we can cosmetically close that space using various alternatives.  The first and best is to do orthodontics to move the teeth together.  This is accomplished using Invisalign removable retainers which will sequentially move your teeth into a more esthetic appearance.

Don’t want to go through orthodontics then cosmetic bonding is another alternative.  Here resin composite which matches the color of your teeth is placed without drilling or injections to recreate a more pleasing appearance when you smile.   If the space is somewhat large dental veneers made in a dental lab used on multiple teeth can achieve the smile you are looking for.

When you love your smile your confidence increases and you smile more often making those you interact with you feel a whole lot better.

So give us a call at 212 517 9000.  We are always looking to meet new people.  We are conveniently located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan at 1498 Third Avenue between 84th and 85th streets.

So don’t delay call today and your teeth will be glad you did.

It’s Not James Bond but Dental Bond

Good Evening and welcome to my world of dentistry.  Sometimes nature can be cruel or accidents do occur.  When these maladies concern your teeth you might be seeing me.  It’s a good thing.  Maybe your teeth are misshapen, asymmetric, have gaps and spaces between themselves, discolorations and/or stains, chipped or cracked or have an exposed root.

If you’ve noticed any of these flaws in your own smile then come on down and meet with us.  Dental bonding can be an effective way to cosmetically rejuvenate your tooth or teeth.  Dental bonding is using an acrylic resin which is matched to the color of your teeth and can be molded to recreate a more pleasing appearance to your smile.

Once placed, tooth bonding should be brushed and flossed just like all your other teeth.  It is amazing how just a little bonding in certain areas of your mouth can brighten your whole smile.

We are located at 1498 Third Avenue in Yorkville between 84th and 85th Streets.  Easily accessible to the 4,5,6 and Q subway lines one block away and local bus service.  So if you need a cleaning or maybe a little bit more give us a call today at; 212 517 9000.

Wearing Your Best Smile

When You’re Smiling The Whole World Smiles With You

The saying you lead with your smile is quite true.  If your teeth look healthy and are esthetically pleasing you smile more.  Smiling can become contagious.  A happy healthy look for you makes others around you also feel better.  Your smile gives you confidence to achieve.  Today in dentistry we have the ability to restore your teeth to health and if Mother Nature didn’t give you the best smile we can help to correct the situation.

The easiest correction is if your teeth are a tad too yellow we can bleach them to something more pleasing.  If your teeth are out of alignment we can use clear tray orthodontics to bring them more into position.  If your teeth are chipped or broken we can restore them to health and beauty with crowns, veneers or onlays.

Your gums are the frame around the picture.  If your gums are inflamed and angry looking we can treat them so they return to health.  If you have a gummy smile that affects your smile we can do minor gum surgery to correct the situation.

Sometimes the first step is to just come in for a consultation and tell us what bothers you.  Not being a dentist you probably do not know what alternatives now exist to make you look even more beautiful.  If everything is fine and all you need or want is a cleaning we are also here for you.

Dental insurance actually covers a percentage for most dental treatments we provide so your expense is even reduced.  Even if going to the dentist is not on the top of your to-do list , if you find yourself raising your hand to cover your mouth whenever a photo is taken, or if your smile is always with your lips closed, maybe it’s time to come in and see what we can do for you.

A more pleasing smile could change your life for the better.

At the dental practice of Glenn Reit DDS we like meeting new people and we love taking care of their teeth.  Conveniently located at 1498 Third Avenue between 84th and 85th Streets in Yorkville we are easy to get to.  So if you are so inclined give us a call today at 212 517 9000

You and your smile will be glad you did.

When Your Crown Falls Out... What do you do?

You’ve Lost Your Crown

Your Tooth Kingdom is challenged

What Will You Do?

For many of us at some time in our lives a tooth has deteriorated to a point where a dental filling can no longer be placed.  A more elaborate tooth restoration has been performed.   This is a dental crown sometimes considered a dental cap by the public.   The crown restores your tooth to function but it is cemented onto your tooth.

Life happens and cements do fail and your crown is suddenly off.  Your tooth has lost its head.  It needs to be reattached as soon as possible.  The exposed tooth is not as strong as other teeth since the protective enamel layer has been removed during the tooth preparation for the crown.

Sometimes a crown comes off due to a new cavity that has formed at the margin of the crown.  If this occurs and the situation is not rectified quickly it can lead to the fabrication of a new crown.

Unencumbered teeth like to migrate like birds.  They like to move towards the front of your mouth.  In addition they like to move up or down depending on if they are on your upper or lower jaws.  This ability for teeth to move is why orthodontics or braces work.

When you crown is no longer attached to your tooth there is now a space both horizontally and vertically for the tooth to begin moving into.  So the quicker the crown is restored the less chance of movement of the opposing and/or adjacent teeth.

So, if your crown is off you need to take action now.  You need to see a dental professional who will evaluate your situation and provide a solution.

If you are in need of this service or just want a check up or dental cleaning give us a call at 212 517 9000. At the dental practice of Dr Glenn Reit we like people and we like resolving any dental challenges you may be facing.  We are conveniently located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan at 1498 Third Avenue between 84th and 85th streets in Yorkville.  You and your teeth will be glad you did.

Why You Should Not Avoid Going to the Dentist

Not going to the dentist can bite you.

Your brain due to experience will try to protect you from experiencing pain.  One of the unfortunate consequences of life is that when you are little you have very little say in what happens to you.  One of these circumstances is when going to the dentist you had a painful experience. This will haunt you for a very long time.

As stated before if you experienced pain from earlier dental procedures your brain will tell you to stay away from the dentist.  This can boomerang.  As time goes by, not going to the dentist can allow a minor problem to become a big problem.  Now you’re in pain and your expectation is you’re going to have more pain.

Today dentistry has progressed where even the dreaded root canal can generally be treated painlessly. The time to come in for a dental checkup is when you are feeling fine.  Then any mysteries can be exposed before they can bite you.

At the dental practice of Glenn Reit DDS I realized going to the dentist is vastly different than being the dentist.  It’s a lot different being the patient under treatment.  So, I take it very seriously to ensure you have a pain free experience while in the office.

We will diagnose any situation you may have, give you alternatives to resolve the situation and give you local anesthetics to prevent you from feeling any pain during treatment.  I have taken the time to learn how to give painless dental injections which most patients appreciate.

So if you are in need of dental treatment or just a cleaning give us a call at 212 517 9000 and we’ll be happy to meet with you.

Tools for Tooth Transformations

Are You Looking At Me?

Well, people are and when they do they see your teeth.  You lead with your smile.  Don’t you want to have a healthy and flattering appearance?  Unfortunately, for some you’re given teeth that are not what you desire.  Not to worry today in dentistry we can transform your smile into something more pleasing.

There are several methods to do this.  If your teeth are discolored or misshapen we can recontour them using tools we have.  Sometimes this and just tooth whitening can produce wonders.  If your discoloring is more intense a dental veneer can be made.  Here a small piece of porcelain is bonded onto the front of your anterior teeth producing the shape and color you desire.

Sometimes decay from not flossing or brushing occurs.  Today we have white fillings which will match the color of your existing tooth and will replace the damaged part of the tooth.

Due to the stresses of life and former dental work, a tooth can fracture.  Here a dental crown or cap can be fabricated to restore the look and function of the affected tooth.  With a crown you are now officially a king or queen.

Sometimes, teeth have a will of their own and will move into areas not appreciated by you.  Using orthodontics we can move the teeth into a more desirable position.  Traditionally this was done using wires and brackets but now there are clear aligners which move the teeth and are virtually invisible.

At the dental practice of Dr. Glenn Reit DDS located in Yorkville we like people and the teeth connected to them.  If you are desirous of a cosmetic consultation to see what dentistry has to offer to enhance your smile give us a call at 212 517 9000.  We are conveniently located at 1498 Third Avenue directly across from our own Upper East Side Mickey Dees on the second floor of a five story brownstone.

So if you are in the 10028, 10128, 10075 or 10021 zip codes we are in your neighborhood.    The 4,5,6, and Q subway lines are within one block of the office and bus service is readily available.

Do Veneers Make Your Teeth Look Bigger?

What’s Up Doc?

You may like Bugs Bunny but you probably do not want to look like Bugs Bunny.  However some people actually do as they want big anterior teeth.  Maybe a big pair of upper chomper’s isn’t the look you’re going for but that’s up to you.

Sometimes your front teeth do not look the way you would like them to.  Nature can be cruel, but as dentists we can out maneuver nature.  Your teeth may be discolored or have distorted shapes leading to a non pleasing appearance.  What can you do?   Ideally orthodontics where your teeth are moved into a more pleasing and functional appearance can be done but many patients will not accept the time to accomplish the procedure.

As an alternative porcelain veneers can be done.  These are thin pieces of porcelain that are bonded to the front of your anterior teeth to correct the unacceptable color or shape of these teeth.  For veneers to look natural we need to reduce some of your teeth in most cases.  If no reduction is done the finished veneers can look too big and bulky.

There are multiple alternatives to correcting your teeth to give a more pleasing look.  Since you lead with your smile and many of us are now on zoom conference calls your teeth are apparent.  If you would like an evaluation of your smile and the alternatives available give us a call today at 212 517 9000.

We are located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in Yorkville at 1498 Third Avenue between 84th and 85th streets.  Easily accessible by subway and bus or just walking, we are here for you.  We like people and we like teeth.  Call Today, you and your teeth will be glad you did.

Do You Have Bad Breath or Dry Mouth?

How Dry I Am

Dry mouth leads to bad breath.  Sometimes we just can’t help it.  If you sleep with your mouth open your mouth will dry out and you’ll lead with your breath.  If you have sinus problems and breathe more through your mouth instead of your nose you’ll dry out your mouth.  Sometimes due to medications you need to take you’ll have a dry mouth.

If so there are rinses, sugar free gum and suckers you can take to bring increased moisture into your mouth.  In addition to bad breath, dry mouth leads to an increased incidence of dental decay. If you have a continuous dry mouth syndrome in your life going to the dentist on a regular basis is a necessity.

We can examine your teeth to make sure no cavities are forming.  Sometimes a fluoride treatment or custom fluoride trays can be made for you to help keep your teeth healthy.

Give us a call at 212 517 9000 today.  We will be happy to meet with you and evaluate your situation.  We are located at 1498 Third Avenue between 84th and 85th streets.  We are here if you need us.

So You Want Straight Teeth and Don’t Want To Wait

In an ideal situation if your teeth are out of alignment you undergo orthodontic treatment to straighten them.  Today in addition to traditional metal braces which most patients will not accept due to esthetics there is clear orthodontic tray therapy.  However, some patients will not tolerate wearing trays while others want immediate results.

For those who will not or cannot wait, teeth can be straightened with the application of porcelain veneers.  Traditionally, veneers were used to improve the color and shape of anterior teeth.  Some individuals due to the ingestion of tetracycline by the mother during pregnancy developed darkly stained teeth which will not whiten.  For those people veneers restored the desired color they want.   Some patients have anterior teeth that are not esthetically pleasing due to the shape of their teeth.  With veneers we can alter the shape and color of non esthetic teeth very quickly.

Some patients do not like the look of their smile due to the misalignment of their teeth.  For these individuals cosmetic veneers can reposition their teeth to be more in alignment.   Veneers are small pieces of porcelain that are bonded onto the front of your teeth.  Consider them somewhat like Lee Press on Nails.

There are two ways veneers are done.  In one scenario the teeth are not modified and the veneers are just bonded onto the existing teeth.  These are called no prep veneer.   The problem is the appearance of the teeth being bulky since no room was created for the veneers which is somewhat like having a thimble on your thumb.

If the teeth are prepped then the veneers appear more natural.   A combination of the two treatments may be necessary to produce a pleasing smile in a patient whose teeth are misaligned.  To help a patient decide if this type of treatment will produce the desired result we have a cosmetic wax up done for the patient by the lab before proceeding.   This allows the patient to make an intelligent decision before beginning treatment.

At the dental practice of Glenn Reit DDS located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan we like making people happy and if you are unhappy with your smile we may be able to help you.  Conveniently located at 1498 Third Avenue between 84th and 85th streets directly across from our very own Mickey Dees we are easy to get to.   The 4,5,6 and Q subway lines are a block away as are multiple bus lines

Do you want to be Crowned?

Prince Charles did and did.  He now has a crown and is King.  In dentistry we can also crown you.  However, you would rather avoid being crowned for it means your tooth is in trouble.  Sometimes a crown may be too aggressive and instead you need a veneer.  Does the King of England need a veneer, he might look a little better.

So to crown or to veneer that is the question.  Generally when you get a cavity or decay in a tooth due to lack of brushing or flossing the first step is to place a filling.  Think of this as a pothole in the road.  If the pothole is not fixed as cars continually drive over this hole becomes larger.

In your mouth a hole if not repaired will also get bigger and if left long enough could become painful.

So initially a filling is placed.  If you get another cavity in the same tooth or if the filling breaks then it’s time for your tooth to be crowned.

Think of a crown as a girdle to hold your tooth together.  Today the crowns are made of esthetic materials that will match you adjacent teeth.  Your tooth is now whole and you’re ready for action.  Sometimes on anterior teeth a hole is bigger than a filling but not big enough for a crown.  In this case we can place a veneer to replace the missing or decayed portion of your tooth.

Veneers can also be used esthetically to enhance the beauty of your smile even if there is no hole in your tooth.  Remember you lead with your smile and a beautiful smile enhances most people’s self esteem.  If you think you need to be crowned or veneered or just in need of a cleaning give us a call.  We’ll be glad to see you.  Even though we repair teeth we are more concerned with the person connected to the tooth.

We are conveniently located at 1498 Third Avenue in Yorkville between 84th and 85th streets in a five story brownstone on the second floor directly across from our own Upper East Side McDonalds.

Easy to get to by; bus, subway or just walking around the block.  So call today 212 517 9000 you and your teeth will be glad  you did.

A New Reason to Eat More Fish for Your Dental Health

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t. Sometimes you want to fish, sometimes you don’t. However as for your gums they like nuts and fatty fish. Research claims there is a link between diets high in polyunsaturated fatty acids and a decreased risk for periodontal disease.

Gum disease is alive and present in the population.  Many individuals have gum disease and don’t even know it.   Around all your teeth is a cuff or pocket.  In a healthy situation this pocket should be about 3 mm in depth.  When you eat food begins to break down within your mouth.  As it breaks down it releases acids which if not routinely removed can cause decay and gum disease.

You prevent this from happening by brushing and flossing hopefully twice per day.  Your toothbrush can clean the top, front and back of your teeth.  However, it cannot get in between your teeth.  This is where dental floss comes in.  Properly used floss or string can get in between your teeth and remove any accumulated food present.

If the food is not removed it begins to break down and cause inflammation.  As the inflammation progresses it destroys the ligaments that hold your teeth in your jaws.  Not a good thing.  Enough destruction leads to tooth mobility and eventual tooth loss.

Researchers have found that people whose diets are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids were as much as 30% less likely to have gum disease than those who ate little or none of this type of fat.  Foods that are a good source of these types of fats include salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel, sardines and herring.

Oils that also have these fats are safflower, soybean, corn, and sunflower.  Almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, pecans, brazil nuts and pumpkin, sesame, sunflower and flax seeds are also good

The possibility of preventing gum disease is not the only reason to eat foods with polyunsaturated fats.

These foods pack a nutritional punch and have myriad health benefits.

Please understand that diet alone will not treat or prevent gum disease, however it may be an additional tool for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

If you have not had an examination or teeth cleaning in a while I urge you to schedule an examination and cleaning today.  We are conveniently located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in Yorkville at 1498 Third Avenue between 84th and 85th street.

The 4,5,6 and Q subway lines along with the MTA bus lines are one block away.  We participate with the major dental insurance carriers.   For most Aetna, Cigna, Delta, Guardian, MetLife and United Health Care patients you are covered at 100% for an exam, x-rays and cleaning with no patient co-payment as long as your benefits have not been used.

Call us TODAY at 212 517 9000.   As a courtesy we will do a benefits check before you come in to confirm your eligibility for a preventive care cleaning appointment at no charge to you.

Help I’ve Lost My Kingdom...I lost my crown!

My crown has come off.  What will I do?   I am still the master of my universe but inside my mouth I don’t have a clue.  Yes some dentists say crowns are permanent but even your dental insurance carrier will pay for the same procedure every five years, so much for permanence.  Your crown should last for more than five years but crowns do come off.

If you crown comes off the first thing to do is NOT to place it back in your mouth.  You need to call a dentist – maybe me and bring the crown and yourself to the office.  Hopefully when your crown came off it did not break the tooth which is supporting it.

In most cases we can clean the crown and the tooth and then reattach it back to how it was.  The reason you do not want to place it yourself in your mouth with temporary cement from the drug store is if you do not place it exactly correctly you may not be able to close your mouth.  Also sometimes the crown comes off due to decay and needs to be remade.

The most important consequence of placing it back into your mouth on your own is that you might swallow it.  If it goes into your stomach it will probably pass through but you will have to look then next time you see a man about a horse.  If it drops into your windpipe you’ll be at the emergency room.

At the dental practice of Glenn Reit DDS we like people and the teeth connected to them.  Yes, only a dentist can love a tooth and we love teeth.  If your crown has decided to take a vacation give us a call.

We will look at your situation and give you alternatives and the costs involved allowing you to make an educated decision on what to do.

Conveniently located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan at 1498 Third Avenue between 84th and 85th Streets in a five story brownstone on the second floor directly across from our very own Upper East Side Mickey Dees – that’s where you’ll find us.

Don’t delay call today at 212 517 9000.  You’ll be glad you did and once again you'll be the king or queen of your domain with your crown intact.

Tea for You and Tea for Me

Most people like tea.  In the winter hot and in the summer cold, but tea has tannic acid within and this can cause your teeth to stain.  Do you drop the tea or do you accept the staining?   I like my tea so I’ll continue to imbibe but I’m also not big on yellow teeth, so what to do?

You need to clean your teeth regularly.  You take a bath/shower and go to the bathroom daily so extend that habit to your teeth.  A good start in addition to brushing and flossing regularly is to rinse your mouth with water after drinking your tannic beverage.

Not to beat up on tea alone.  Coffee and red wine will also stain your teeth over time so, if you still do not like the color of your teeth you can come in for a professional cleaning.  If you still are not happy we have whitening products which will lighten the color of your teeth.

So call today 212 517 9000 and we’re here to help.   At the dental practice of Dr Glenn Reit DDS we like teeth and the people connected to them.  After being in Los Angeles for 20 years and now back in New York for another ten we know whitening.  In LA you can never have too white teeth, along with a nice tan and a fit healthy body.  Here in New York City everyone is on the run but most also want attractive smiles.

Sinus vs Abscessed Tooth?

What is the sign us?

No directional sign here.  But, your sinus is the area in your head above your teeth which is an air cavity.  Think of it as your own internal cave system.  One of the problems with the sinus is when you are not feeling well the area may become full of fluid which can cause you pain and pressure.  When your sinus is filled with fluid your teeth can start to hurt.   The question is whether it is sinus pain or an abscessed tooth.

If a tooth develops decay and if the decay becomes large it can cause the nerve within the tooth to die causing your tooth to start to hurt. You may feel a throbbing pain or start waking up at night.  Your ear on the same side as the involved tooth may also begin to hurt.  If you have these symptoms you probably have an abscessed tooth which will need a root canal treatment to relieve the pain.

Other times if a tooth or several teeth on one side of your head begin to hurt it is due to inflammation of your sinus.  If your sinus fills with liquid it puts pressure on your teeth, especially the posterior ones with large roots that may be within your sinus.  Your teeth are connected to your jaw by ligaments.  Think shock absorbers.  So if your sinus is full the teeth are pushed a little out of their housings and when you chew your lower teeth start banging into them.  Sometimes the roots of the teeth become exposed making your teeth more sensitive to hot and cold.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms give us a call at 212 517 9000.   At the dental practice of Dr Glenn Reit, DDS we pride ourselves in helping you resolve your dental problems.   Conveniently located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in the 10028 zip code within one block of the 4,5,6 and Q subway lines, it is easy to access us.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

What is good, what is bad and what is ugly?  The good is a healthy mouth which gives you a radiant appearance and the ability to enjoy your food.  The bad is being in pain with your teeth and not making an effort to correct the situation.  The ugly is having not caring at all with people looking and smelling odors coming from your mouth and running for the hills.

At the dental practice of Dr Glenn Reit, DDS we like correcting the bad and ugly to the good.   No matter what your situation, dentistry has progressed so we are able to offer you multiple paths to the good.

Sometimes, if you have had bad experiences at the dentist you become the ugly because your brain says dentistry, bad.  If this is you we need to break this association and show you that dentistry can be good.

In addition to restoring your teeth we now have the ability to cosmetically improve your smile.  If you have a dental problem we can help you to resolve that.  There are multiple paths for most dental problems.  Here at our office we will advise of your options and the costs involved thereby allowing you to make an intelligent decision.

Once your basic dental health is achieved we also have the ability to modify your smile if you are not happy with what nature has provided.  Through orthodontics with clear aligners, whitening, veneers or bonding we can create the smile of your dreams.

So even if you are in need of just a cleaning or more substantial treatment don’t delay call today.  You’ll be glad you did.

Dental Crowns

How many kingdoms do you rule?  If you have many crowns you could be an emperor.  Teeth have a hard life.  Continually they are under pressure from chewing, grinding and clenching.  The outside of your tooth is covered with enamel, a very hard substance that gives strength to your teeth and helps prevent decay.  However, bacteria are tenacious and over time can make a small hole in the enamel and access the inner surface of your tooth.

The inside of your tooth is made up of dentin which is not as strong as enamel.  The decay that attacks your teeth is anaerobic meaning it likes areas without oxygen.  Once inside your tooth there is no oxygen present and it is warm and dark making the bacteria even happier.  If the bacteria take off and eat too much of your tooth you may need a crown to preserve the tooth in your head.

A crown is like a girdle.  It holds your tooth together.   Crowns are made of different materials.  A metal crown is quite strong but not too attractive.  The best crown is made of gold which has the same expansion and contraction as your own teeth.  A gold crown can have a very thin margin and have the best fit on your tooth.  However, the gold color may not be acceptable for most patients esthetically.

Today we have tooth colored crowns which will match the color of your own teeth.  Most patients prefer this type of restoration.  There are several types of porcelain crowns we can use based on the condition of your tooth.

A crown after being placed may not make you a queen or king for life but it will save your tooth.
