Are Your Foundations Strong

You may not be aware but just like a beautiful building you would not see it without a strong foundation. The same is true with your teeth. Teeth are maintained in your jaw due to healthy bone and surrounding gum tissue. You could have a full set of teeth without any filings or decay and lose them to a poor foundation. Periodontal disease or gum disease which attacks the foundations of your teeth is preventable and also amendable to treatment. The good news is that you control the extent of gum disease in your mouth. The easiest way to prevent gum disease is through daily brushing and flossing. Ideally you should floss and brush twice per day. Once in the morning upon waking and a second time at night before retiring. You want to decrease the amount of bacteria in your mouth especially before going to sleep where bacteria thrive in an environment that is warm, dark and without air. Failure to brush and floss at night leaves excess food in your mouth. Upon waking you need to brush and floss to remove any overnight buildup. Also morning mouth can be disturbing to your friends. Realize all the bacteria in your mouth are anaerobic meaning without oxygen. When you brush your teeth you bring air into your mouth which contains 20% oxygen. Your teeth are squares or cubes and when you brush you clean the top, back and front but do not get in between. However when you floss you bring air in between your teeth reducing the levels of bacteria. All teeth have a cuff surrounding them which in health is 3mm in depth. When you eat, food accumulates in these pockets and if not removed breaks down releasing acids. In the first phase of gum disease called gingivitis the ligaments holding the teeth in your mouth are attacked. Once the pocket gets greater than 5 mm in depth you are no longer able to reach the base of the pocket through flossing since the floss would have to cut your gums to reach the bottom of the pocket. If food continues to accumulate in the second phase of gum disease called periodontitis the pockets will increase in depth. This leads to bone loss and eventual tooth mobility and tooth loss. Periodontal surgery is then necessary to save your teeth which is expensive and slightly painful. The good news is daily flossing and brushing with bi-yearly dental exams and cleanings will prevent this situation from occurring. So let the floss be with you for continued dental health.

Missing a Tooth? Here’s How Dental Implants Can Restore Your Smile

If you notice in the reception area of the practice we have plants. They are actually alive and growing. No plastic plants here. In addition to planting plants we also plant teeth in areas of missing teeth. The planting is called implanting as in placing a piece of titanium into your jaw in the shape of a tooth’s root to allow us to restore a missing tooth with a created one that closely matches your former tooth. Is there a tooth in your mouth that is now no longer present? Did you lose that tooth due to trauma as in biting on ice, a cherry or olive pit? Did you fall down and hit that tooth? Did you have a root canal procedure years ago which has now failed. The big question is; do you miss that tooth? If so, we have an answer for you. We can replace it without disturbing your adjacent teeth. We have been doing this in the practice for more than 10 years. In the past, the standard of care in dentistry was to do a bridge. Think George Washington which consists of two towers with a suspended roadway. A bridge in dentistry where you are missing a tooth would involve reducing the two adjacent teeth next to the missing tooth and then creating a roadway or three connected teeth or crowns together to restore the missing tooth. The problem is the adjacent teeth could be decay free and now you are grinding them down to nubs. In addition it’s hard to floss between attached teeth leading to a greater chance of gum disease. The beauty of the implant is that the adjacent teeth are not touched. You are only replacing the lost tooth and once restored you will still be able to floss normally. Esthetically your new tooth will match your other teeth and only you will know you had the procedure. Insurance generally pays for fifty percent of the procedure up to your insurance maximum. If you are missing a tooth, maybe now is the time to consider a dental implant. If you have flexible spending, October is usually the month to make your contribution for next year. If this sounds interesting to you; give us a call today and we’ll discuss your situation.

SIMPLE WAYS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR TEETH

Maybe you lift weights to build strength, but are you doing things to strengthen your teeth? There are ways to strengthen your teeth. Just like you want to have strong bones, having strong teeth is also advantageous. Having a healthy diet, good oral hygiene, and regular dental checkups is a good start. Tooth enamel is the hard surface of your teeth, which needs to be strong and healthy to prevent dental decay from penetrating into the interior of the tooth leading to dental problems. Enamel can weaken due to genetics, illnesses and/or poor oral hygiene habits. Brushing too strongly with a stiff toothbrush can wear down the enamel surface. Unlike your bones, your teeth do not have regenerative cells so once the enamel is worn down it will not build back up. Fermentable carbohydrates which are found in breakfast cereals, crackers, breads, bananas, soft drinks, candy, cookies and other starchy foods form harmful and dangerous acids on your teeth. When combined with bacteria, those acids will start to break down the enamel. This demineralization process literally eats away at the naturally produced minerals in your enamel. Clearly meaning that highly processed foods and sweet treats will cause demineralization of your tooth enamel over time. Brushing twice per day and flossing once per day is vital if you want to strengthen your teeth. Be careful not to brush too hard and always brush at a forty-five degrees angle with a soft bristled toothbrush using short and decisive strokes. Brush for at least two minutes and don’t forget your tongue as bacteria love to linger in places your toothbrush misses. The saliva that you produce after you brush your teeth can also help prevent demineralization as it contains proteins and minerals that will safeguard the enamel on your teeth. Saliva is constantly washing off the germs on your teeth and helps to maintain the pH of your mouth thereby reducing acid production. Our early ancestors had quite a different diet from us and showed very little signs of weakened tooth enamel. New York City water is fluoridated which helps to keep your enamel strong. A healthy diet includes whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products. So, keep on brushing and may the floss be with you.

Looking and Feeling Good When Your Teeth and Gums Are Healthy

You lead with your smile.  People make subconscious decisions on the way you look.  May not be right but it is true especially when seeing your upper anterior teeth.

Overtime teeth can discolor, wear down, break or move.  Dentistry today has many options to restore your teeth to a more pleasing position, color, and shape.  The least invasive is to just whiten your teeth using disposable trays that contain a bleaching gel.

We offer trays that you wear for ten minutes per night for three to four nights and your teeth will lighten.  Not toilet bowl white but whiter than they were.   We find most patients are happy with the result and the cost at 125 dollars is not a stretch.

If your tooth has chips or missing pieces sometimes we can restore them with a simple bonding procedure.  Here composite or white filling material is applied to restore your teeth and matched to the color of your teeth.

If decay or trauma has broken your tooth we can do a porcelain crown to restore it.  With this procedure we can completely reshape your tooth and restore the color you desire.

If the tooth is healthy with no breakage and no decay but you’re just not happy with the look we can do porcelain veneers.   Here a sliver of porcelain is bonded to the front surface of your tooth giving you the shape and color you desire.

If your teeth are out of alignment we can move them into a more pleasing position through orthodontics.   Today using clear trays we can accomplish this treatment without others knowing you are actually undergoing it.  No longer do you need to show metal wires and brackets when you smile.

Your smile is a reflection of your overall health.  At the dental practice of Dr. Glenn Reit we have been doing these procedures for decades.  In fact we have gone through all the iterations of these procedures as they have been released.

We are conveniently located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan at 1498 Third Avenue between 84th and 85th streets in Yorkville.  The 4,5,6 and Q subway lines are one block away.

Something Lost, Something Found

I’ve Lost A Tooth and I’m not Happy About It

In life things change and one alteration is you could lose a tooth.  This could be through neglect, an accident, or failure of a dental restoration. With regular dental check-ups and dental cleanings problems can be diagnosed before they become problematic saving teeth before they need to be lost.

If the situation arises that you lose a tooth, what are your alternatives?  You could just go without the tooth which probably is not acceptable if it is a front tooth but in the back maybe yes.  For most you want the tooth put back.

Today the best solution is an implant for a single tooth loss.  Here a piece of titanium shaped into the form of a root is placed within your jaw.  After a suitable period of time a crown which looks like your tooth can be then fabricated and attached to the implant.  Now you have a new tooth which looks and functions like the original.

If you do not want an implant you can have a fixed bridge.  Here the missing tooth is attached to the two adjacent teeth if present.  This was the main alternative to replacing a lost tooth before implants became available.   The downside is that the adjoining teeth have to be cut down so crowns can be placed and the missing tooth is joined to the adjacent teeth making it harder to floss and the adjacent teeth which could be healthy and non-carious are being sacrificed in a way to replace the missing tooth.

Another alternative which does not damage the adjacent teeth is to have a removable partial made.  Here a plastic tooth is fabricated that is placed in your mouth in the morning and is removed before sleeping.  The problem is the tooth moves around, food gets under it and you have to take it in and out.

At the dental practice of Dr Glenn Reit in Yorkville we like teeth and the people attached to them.  Even if all you need is a cleaning we would be happy to meet and treat you.  If it’s something more serious we will give you the alternatives and price points so you can make an informed decision.

The daily grind- How a night guard can help you!

Living in New York City can be stressful.  Hey, I’m Walking Here has been heard.  When your body is under stress one of the ways to relieve it is by grinding and clenching your teeth.  This usually happens when you are unconscious as in sleeping.  You wake up in the morning and when you yawn your muscles in your jaws and head feel sore because they have been experiencing a workout overnight.

If you notice during the day when you’re awake that you find your teeth together or you’re moving your jaws left, right, forward and back you’re grinding and/or clenching while you’re awake meaning you did not get enough relief during the night.

Clenching brings your teeth hard together or grinding moving your jaw around and around does reduce stress but also is damaging to your teeth.  In grinding you wear down the surface of the teeth making them more flat.  This over time can allow your jaw to close further causing disorientation to your jaw joint.  In addition you wear down the enamel of your teeth which is the protective coating which now leads to a greater possibility of tooth decay.

Clenching where you are squeezing your teeth together over time can lead to gum disease due to the increased pressure placed on the ligaments of your teeth.  What to do?  The best solution is to reduce the stress in your life, something hard to do here in the Big Apple.

Or you could come in see us and we have solutions to your problem.   At the dental practice of Dr Glenn Reit located on the upper east side of Manhattan in Yorkville we like meeting new people and taking care of their dental challenges.  Conveniently located at 1498 Third Avenue between 84th and 85th streets close to the 4,5,6 and Q subway lines.

Go for the gold

In the Olympics the goal is to go for gold. In dentistry you can also go for gold. With a gold filling or if you're brave a gold crown. Obviously, the gold crown would need to be on one of your back teeth unless you’re going for the bling.

Most individuals today will not accept gold due to its color. In fact, most people prefer not to have yellow teeth to begin with and will undergo bleaching or cosmetic dentistry to lighten the shade of their teeth. In fact, today the demand for gold dentistry is predominantly by dentists.

That should tell you something. Just like you, dentists do not like going to the dentist. They may like performing dentistry but not having dentistry. When it comes to dentistry women are a lot stronger than men. Something about lying on your back with a stranger working a couple of inches from your brain can cause men to panic.

Back to gold. The reason dentists choose gold is that it lasts the longest. Gold has the same expansion and contraction as enamel. Meaning, gold is the closest to what the outside of your tooth is made of. Gold is very biocompatible with your mouth. It is easy to clean and its edges can be very closely adapted to your tooth structure. In fact, most dental restorations are wide open. Meaning the armies of bacteria in your mouth are marching en mass into the interior of your tooth. Since cementing mediums contain huge amounts of fluoride this helps to keep your teeth protected.

The great drawback to gold is that it is yellow and you can see it and in today’s esthetic conscious society Moi is perfect in every way. Sort of like: Only your hairdresser knows for sure. Here at the practice, we still do gold crowns and gold fillings. If the need arises this alternative will always be presented and then promptly rejected.

The cool thing about gold is when you melt it. It looks like mercury except it is gold in color. You can actually see your reflection in it and before it becomes liquid it has a reddish golden sheen. Just magnificent and it makes you realize why it has been in use since antiquity. However, at 1948 degrees Fahrenheit you certainly don’t want to touch it for then you’ll definitely be singing, but not in a good way. But even today it continues to remain the gold standard in finance and in dentistry.

At the dental practice of Dr. Glenn Reit we realize you will probably not be going for the gold but that’s ok.  We are just informing you of the option. If you are only in search of a dental cleaning we are here for you.  We always like meeting new people and addressing their dental needs.

We are conveniently located at 1498 Third Avenue between 84th and 85th Streets in Yorkville.  We are one block away from the 4,5,6 and Q subway lines.  So, give us a call today at 212 517 9000. You and your teeth will be glad you did.

The War on Teeth Remains

On the HBO show “Game of Thrones,” multiple houses are under attack, and their leaders must shore up foundations for the coming siege. Each house is different from the others, having certain advantages and disadvantages. Using intelligence, cunning, and a plan of action, each leader’s goal is to obtain the throne and be crowned the king or queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Your teeth are also under siege and need to be protected from the coming storm. Daily brushing and flossing will hold back the tide of tooth decay and gum disease. Grinding and clenching at night due to New York City stress also attacks your teeth and can fracture existing restorations. When a tooth fractures due to decay, stress, or a worn-out filling, you may need to be crowned. A crown holds your tooth together just like the chosen one holds the Seven Kingdoms together. Crowns help to prolong the longevity of your tooth by maintaining its structural integrity. Unlike the show, you are already a king or queen, but just as there are multiple houses competing for the throne, there are multiple crowns to choose from. The gold standard is a gold crown. Its advantages are that it is similar to the properties of your tooth and will generally last the longest. However, it’s yellow in color and to most is no longer acceptable. The porcelain-fused metal crown combines the strength of metal with a layer of porcelain to match the shade of your other teeth. Its advantages are strength and aesthetics. Today, many individuals don’t want metal restoration and are looking for more natural alternatives. Since metal allergies are increasing, dental manufacturers have now developed crowns without metal components. These crowns have porcelain on the outside and a ceramic core on the inside. These crowns also have adequate strength and superior aesthetics. Before we undertake the reconstruction of your tooth, we will develop a plan for what works best for you, how long it will take, the costs involved, and allay any of your fears.

At the dental practice of Dr Glenn Reit we are here for you and your teeth.  Give us a call at 212 517 9000 you and your teeth will be glad you did.
